How to talk to the boy I like?

I really like this boy. I've liked him for like a year. He's really nice and funny. I have no idea if he likes me but I really want to talk to him more. The thing is, whenever I try to talk to him I get erflies and I end up saying stupid things. How do I start a conversation with him? We hang out at recess with a bunch of other people but I never really get to talk to him one on one. Also, I recently got a phone and I want his number so I can text him over the summer and stuff but I feel like it would be really weird to ask him. Any advice?
