Yellow ribbon?

well my husband is in the raf and this is the first time he has gone away .. im a brit so im not sure entirely how this works but i want to tie a yelllow ribbon for when he comes back .. is this normal even if he is just deployed and not at war or not??? help plz guys .. no neg comments
