Can a fig tree survive the winter?

hello my father has a farm in canada and my father always wanted fig trees because he like it . can i buy some fig trees from the nursery and plant them right in the ground will they die or can they survive the cold and snowy winter and how much $ will it cost thx and also do they grow fast and when will it produce fruit thx
