What's high school in america like?

is it really like in the movies? with all the jocks, cheerleaders, nerds. etc. and stuff. just wondering. cuz i live in Australia. and its not really like that. so can u describe (preferably in detail) what a day or week in a public american high school is like? what are the students, work, lunch and recess, cliques, teachers etc like?
